Microsoft Surface Pro 3: Pricing

By:Christine Fettinger

Since the release of the Surface Pro 3 many are questioning the price of this new device. The tablet and laptop market is flooded with options. To help we have  created a list of Microsoft’s current Surface Pro 3 pricing:

Intel Core i364GB4GB of RAM$799
Intel Core i5128GB4GB of RAM$999
Intel Core i5256GB8GB of RAM$1,299
Intel Core i7256GB8GB of RAM$1,549
Intel Core i7512GB8GB of RAM$1,949

Prices as of 6/25/14

Microsoft markets this product as the “Revolutionary Laptop” that comes with no keyboard. The extra keyboard adds another $129 to the already high prices.

As of today similar priced devices include the MacBook Pro Retina, ThinkPad X1 Carbon i5, and Yoga 2 Pro can completely replace the Surface Pro 3. The Surface Pro 3 dimensions are 11.5 x 7.93 x .36 inches, which is very close to 12-inches. It only weighs in at 1.76 lbs!

The current mid-level Surface Pro 3 with an Intel i5, 128GB, 4GB of RAM priced at $999 is very appealing. Let’s not forget to add the extra keyboard. The price comes out to $1128 which directly targets the Ultrabook market. Such as Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1 which starts at $1,249 with similar specs (i5, 128GB, 4GB of RAM) at a larger form factor of 14-inches.

To put this into perspective, what are you using the Surface Pro 3 for? Users should steer clear way from the Surface Pro 3 if they’re replacing their entire desktop. Purchasing the Surface Pro 3 as a tablet does not seem reasonable as there are lower priced tablets than the Surface Pro 3. For the average user who browses the web with occasional an Microsoft Office 365 subscription could easily live with the Surface Pro 3. Users who require intense precision on a touchpad, intense scrolling, and data entry should consider an Ultrabook.
