Lync Online Now Skype for Business – And There’s 7 New Exciting Features You’ll Love!

By:Christine Fettinger

For quite some time, Microsoft struggled with the branding of Lync Online.

Lync for business

Those who are unfamiliar – Lync Online is a communication tool bundled with most Office 365 for Business plans. Lync Online is now officially named “Skype for Business.” In short, Skype for Business features instant messaging, voice/video conferencing, and presence.

What Lync Online offered towards the Office 365 suite was nothing new, instead, it forced customers to research or use a product that they are unfamiliar with. With a rebranded title – most will immediately recognize the name Skype for Business.

Let’s look under the hood and beyond the name change. A quintessential part of an Enterprise application is security. Skype for business allows enterprise-grade security combined with the latest compliance regulations along with user management.

Skype for Business not only allows communication within the organization, but access to millions of customers who have existing Skype ID’s. A great move for Microsoft as it minimizes the learning curve. This allows consumers to become familiar and reduce fear with their product by simply scaling their client database.

Existing Lync Online will find this transition quick and easy. Simply turn on Windows Update. Note: Allow Windows Update to receive updates from Microsoft products and the transition should be painless.

Here’s the top 7 new exciting features you’ll love:

  • Newer menus
  • Improved desktop sharing
  • Additional Emoticons
  • Enhanced File Transfer
  • Call Monitoring
  • Integration with OneNote
  • Outlook Meeting Integration

Stay tuned for more Skype for Business updates – we will gradually see more UI integration with the Office 365 suite. Mac users will have to wait, as there is no Skype for Business client available.
